Dry Cleaning is a process in which garments are cleaned through a chemical and not with water. The chemical that is used is known as tetrachloroethylene (also known as perc) and is used to specifically remove and treat oil based stains in fabrics. This is done in a dry cleaning machine which looks like a very large washing machine that fills with perc and agitates the clothing. Through the process the fabrics do become ‘wet’ with chemical but no water is involved in this process. Some stains will not be removed solely from the dry cleaning machine and that is where we come in. We have many chemicals that we use to treat the stain before and after the cleaning process to help clean each and every garment that we come across.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I dry clean something and not just launder it?
Depending on the garment, laundering can ruin it. Wool for example will shrink when laundered where as the dry cleaning chemical perc will be able to clean it and not have it shrink.
Preserving silk, for example, is able to be laundered. It is a delicate fabric but if you launder it will become stiff and uncomfortable. When you dry clean it the fibres are softened and the silk garment returns to the nice smooth feel that it originally had.
I have a stain on my shirt/pants/jacket what should I do?
We at Village Dry Cleaners recommend you bring it to us. We are able to treat the garment with several different chemicals that are specifically designed for working on one type of stain whether it is protein based, ink based, yellow based, make up based, dirt based, or many other types.
If you bring it to us without treating it or working on it first we have a much better chance of restoring the garment to its original condition and removing the stain. Unfortunately, if it has been cleaned or treated prior too it can be much more difficult to remove the stain because it may have been set already.
